Requirements to Join The American Legion
Important: Please provide proof of eligible service (e.g., DD-214 or equivalent). Many posts request a copy to verify eligibility. National guidance indicates documentation is required when needed to verify information. See: American Legion FAQ and DD-214 Guidance.
New Membership
Eligible veterans applying for first-time membership should submit:
- Complete the American Legion membership application: Apply Online at legion.org/join or use the printable application: Download PDF.
- Proof of eligible service (DD-214 or equivalent orders/records).
- Membership dues payment (amount as shown on the application). Make checks payable to the Post. Do not send cash.
- Once verified and approved, your membership card will be mailed to you.
Transfers
Members transferring from another Post should submit:
- Completed Member Data Form,
- Proof of eligible service (DD-214 or equivalent), and
- Copy of current membership card.
If current-year dues are unpaid, include payment. If already paid, please pay dues for the upcoming year with the transfer.
Eligibility Dates
Under the LEGION Act (Let Everyone Get Involved in Opportunities for National Service), eligibility is based on honorable service in the U.S. Armed Forces during:
- April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918 (World War I), and
- December 7, 1941 – Present (open-ended wartime period).
Service must include at least one day of federal active duty and an honorable discharge (or you are currently serving honorably). See the official guidance: American Legion FAQ and Eligibility Expansion Overview.
