
Post Committees & Roles
These committees help Daugherty-Hamilton Post 234 execute our mission to serve veterans, their families, and our community. Select a committee below to learn its purpose, key duties, and typical meeting cadence. To get involved, email Commander Laura Heried.
Executive Committee
Purpose: Provides strategic direction and oversight between regular Post meetings.
- Sets agendas and priorities; coordinates cross-committee work.
- Reviews budgets, contracts, risk, and compliance topics.
- Prepares recommendations for membership votes.
Membership
Purpose: Recruit, onboard, retain, and engage members.
- Handles applications/transfers; maintains accurate rosters (with Adjutant).
- Plans outreach at community events; welcomes new members.
- Drives renewals (email/phone/postal) and recognition programs.
Finance & Budget
Purpose: Stewardship of Post funds and fiscal controls.
- Builds annual budget; tracks income/expenses; supports grant compliance.
- Reconciles accounts; prepares monthly and annual financial reports.
- Coordinates with Fundraising on event P&L and cash handling SOPs.
Americanism
Purpose: Promote patriotism, civic education, and respect for the flag.
- Coordinates flag education/retirement, school programs, and patriotic observances.
- Supports essay contests and citizenship initiatives.
Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation (VA&R)
Purpose: Connect veterans with benefits, wellness resources, and assistance.
- Collaborates with County/State Veteran Service Officers (CVSO/SO).
- Coordinates hospital/clinic visits, transportation support, and outreach.
- Maintains resource lists (claims, mental health, caregiver support).
Children & Youth
Purpose: Support programs that serve military/veteran families and local youth.
- Coordinates scholarships, school supplies, and holiday support drives.
- Partners with ALA/SAL and community orgs on youth safety and development.
Community Service
Purpose: Plan and deliver community-facing activities.
- Parades, memorial events, clean-ups, and volunteer projects.
- Coordinates with city/county and local nonprofits.
Public Relations / Communications
Purpose: Tell the Post’s story and keep stakeholders informed.
- Manages newsletter, website updates, and social media.
- Drafts press releases; coordinates with local media.
- Maintains brand standards and photo consent practices.
Legislative
Purpose: Track and communicate non-partisan veteran policy developments.
- Monitors veteran-relevant legislation and informs membership.
- Coordinates resolutions and advocacy aligned with Legion policy.
Honor Guard / Color Guard
Purpose: Render military honors and present the colors at ceremonies.
- Funeral honors scheduling and detail management.
- Parade/color presentation training, uniforms, and equipment care.
Poppy Committee
Purpose: Plan and execute poppy distribution to fund veteran support.
- Order poppies; schedule distribution sites; manage volunteers.
- Ensure funds are tracked and used per program rules.
Oratorical Contest
Purpose: Host the American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program.
- Recruit students; coordinate judges and venue/logistics.
- Promote to schools; submit winners to district/state.
Badger Boys State
Purpose: Select and sponsor students to attend Badger Boys State.
- Coordinate with school counselors; interview candidates.
- Arrange fees, transport support, and orientation.
Scholarship Committee
Purpose: Administer Post scholarship programs fairly and transparently.
- Publish criteria and timelines; evaluate applications.
- Coordinate awards and recognition with schools/families.
Fundraising & Events
Purpose: Plan events and campaigns that fund Post programs.
- Designs annual fundraising calendar (golf outing, raffles, tournaments).
- Owns sponsorships, donations, and event marketing.
Audit Committee
Purpose: Independent review of Post financial records and controls.
- Conducts annual audit; validates receipts, disbursements, policies.
- Reports findings and recommendations to the membership.
Nominating Committee
Purpose: Identify and present a slate of qualified officer candidates.
- Confirms eligibility; gathers member interest; runs the nomination process.
- Ensures transparent, fair elections per by-laws.
Constitution & By-Laws
Purpose: Keep governing documents current and compliant.
- Drafts amendments; aligns with Department/National guidance.
- Maintains policy library and document control.
Building / Maintenance
Purpose: Oversee Post facility safety, readiness, and improvements.
- Schedules inspections; manages repairs and vendors.
- Maintains equipment inventory and preventive maintenance.
Technology / Website
Purpose: Keep digital systems secure and useful for members.
- Maintains website, email lists, and event tools.
- Implements basic cybersecurity hygiene and backups.
Historian
Purpose: Preserve and share the Post’s history and accomplishments.
- Archives photos, documents, and news clippings.
- Publishes annual narrative with highlights and milestones.
Chaplain Support
Purpose: Provide spiritual and morale support to members and families.
- Coordinates invocations/benedictions; supports memorial services.
- Maintains contact with ill/recuperating members.
Service Officer Support
Purpose: Assist the Service Officer in connecting veterans to benefits and claims support.
- Manages intake/referral process and outreach materials.
- Tracks assistance requests while protecting privacy.
